Preparing your Will

One of the most important things you need to do in your lifetime is to prepare a Will that ensures your wishes are carried out after your death. Quite simply a Will is a statement of how you want your possessions, property and funds (your estate) to be distributed when you die.
It is a time to remember your loved ones and to assist those charities that are close to your heart.
In preparing your Will you should seek the assistance of a Trustee or your family Solicitor to ensure that your wishes are clearly and correctly recorded.

Why is a gift in your Will so important for the animals?

Animals play an important part in our lives providing companionship and  support, however unfortunately there are many who are abused and neglected.

The SPCA in Feilding has been providing hands-on help to those animals in need since 1976, responding to their cries for help and prosecuting those who inflict cruelty upon them. The SPCA is one of the few charities in the country who do not receive any Government or Local Body funding operating almost entirely through the generosity of people who care, people like you.

How Can I provide a gift for the animals?

There are a variety of options available to you in the way in which you can help the animals
through your Will, including

·                 Residuary - This refers to what is left over in your estate after all expenses, debts and other specific bequests have been settled. A residue may be shared amongst other beneficiaries by percentage.

·                 Pecuniary - This refers to a specified sum of money as a particular bequest in a Will
requiring constant revision due to inflation or changing circumstances.

·                 Specified Bequest  -  This is the term applied to a particular item, such as:
The proceeds of a life assurance policy, stocks and shares, works of art, vehicles, jeweller and even homes.

To ensure the wording in your Will accurately describes your intentions the following clause
should be included:

“I give (a specified share of the residue/ or the sum of/ or a specified bequest) to
THE FEILDING AND DISTRICTS BRANCH OF THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS  for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the appointed officer of the Society shall be full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy.”

Who will care for my pet after I have gone?

The SPCA in Feilding will of course.
You can guarantee that this will happen by making a provision in your Will. In the event of your death the SPCA will be contacted immediately and will arrange immediate collection of your animal/s at which time The Feilding SPCA will take care of your animal/s and endeavour to find them a suitable home.

To ensure that this occurs suitable wording should be included in your Will.

“In the event that any pet animal of mine survives me and I have made no other provision for it’s care I direct my Trustees to notify THE FEILDING AND DISTRICTS BRANCH OF THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
as soon as is practical after my death and to request that they endeavour to place that animal in a suitable home acknowledging their absolute discretion to deal with the welfare of the animal as considered in its very best interests.”
